We are rennovating a old house and I want to tear out all the bushes and shrubs that are overgrown and ugly right now. But I do not know how to do that most effectively and what to plant being that summer is coming to an end. I want plants or bushes that will show colors for all seasons, and we are at the beach so any tropical flowers or trees that will survive the seasons of N.C. And a palm tree, what kind of maintenaince does that require. Thanks!

Removing established shrubs can usually be accomplished by digging all around the root systems and pulling them out. Try to get all the roots or the roots may send up shoots and you'll have the same shrubs there as you had before. You can plant trees and shrubs in late summer or early fall and they should become established before the winter months. Here's a link to a website from NC University with all kinds of shrub suggestions. http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/...

Hope you have room for them all!
