I've cleared a section of the garden (which gre onions), and am wondering if I can plant a vegetable now that will be harvestanble in mid-late September.

Greens such as lettuce, spinach, and Swiss chard are fast growing and could be harvested as a cut and come again crop. You might also try basil and fast maturing bush beans. Peas can also be grown but will not germinate if the soil is too warm. Here is more information about a fall vegetable garden you might find helpful.
