I have 2 sun ferns on my back deck that had grown and done well all summer. One has suddenly started turning brown and the leaves fall off. It has been in the same spot the entire summer. I am keeping a close eye on the other one and it appears to be starting to do the same thing, with the exception that there are a few fronds that leaves have turned black, rather than brown. Any ideas what has happened and what to do?

Very strange. I suspect that your plants may be either suffering from a temporary dry condition, soggy wet conditions, or possibly from a buildup of something such as salts in the soil if you water quality is poor. If they have been too wet for too long a disease may also be causing the decline. Try to maintain even moisture, trim away any affected fronds even if it means cutting them back to the soil line. They should resume normal growth. Consider applying a very dilute solution of soluble fertilizer such as Miracle Gro or Peters occasionally at the low "Constant Feed" label rate.
