Tomatoes are subject to a number of diseases, but it sounds like yours may be suffering from late blight. This will also cause small, dark, "watersoaked" patches on the leaves and the tomatoes will have greenish grayish spots on them which then turn brown and hard. You might wish to take a sample to the County Extension office for a positive identification of the problem. Unfortunately there is no cure for late blight and if that is what has happened, the plants should be dug up and removed and destroyed, along with any debris from them. I'm sorry about your plants.
