|we winter in Mazatlan Mexico, help??? what can I grow ? veggies? annuals? control bugs?|
|Mazatlan weather is equivalent to USDA zone 11. There's lots you can grow, including nearly everything that grows in Hawaii:|
Painted Fingernail Plant 'Neoregelia' Large finger like olive leaves tipped in red. "Fingernails?" Likes full sun, and wet, fertile soil that is well drained.
Vanda Orchid 'Vanda sanderiana' Truly one of the most beautiful Orchids in the whole world. A favorite with growers world wide.
Banana 'Musa' Beautiful flowers every April but grown in pots in all other zones.
Mango 'Mangifera indica' Delicious but did you know it is part of the poison Ivy family of plants. You can touch this one.
Taro 'Colocasia esculenta' a.k.a. Black Magic.
Mask Flower 'Alonsa Meridionalis' These work great around the foundation of a house or garage. A favorite with Snap Dragon lovers as it is a close relative. Dainty cut flowers.
King Palm 'Archontopheonix cunninghamiana' The most stately of all the Palms. Beautiful tree!
Coffee 'Coffea arabica' Grown for the natural dark roast type flavor. Big commercial import but can grow at home too!
Weeping Chinese Banyon 'Ficus benjamina' BIG tree that works well in a large open space. Anti social and does not do well in a crowd. If crowded will eventually block the sun from anything under it.
Chinese Hibiscus 'Hibiscus roas-sinensis' Indoor plant in most cases but not in Zone 11.
Avocado 'Persea nubigena' Does extremely well and produces for years.
Pineapple 'Annona comosus' If conditions are right this can be a large but beautiful plant.
Papaya 'Carica papaya' L.' Large tree that needs alot of room. This is the fruit of many uses.
