|We purchased the title plant from the local Home Depot store last week. Our Questions follow:
1. Is it an annual or perennial?
2. After getting it home the many leaves are turning yellow and falling off. What is causing that and how can we care for it?
3. Should we put it in the ground as soon as possible?..we havent selected a place for it yet.
4. It still has several unopened buds. Should we apply fertiler and what kind and quantity?
|Your rose mallow is a perennial plant. It's normal for the lower (older) leaves to yellow and fall off at this time of the year. I'd get it into the ground sometime this fall so the roots can become established. By next spring it should be firmly established and ready to grow. Find a place with lots of sunshine and amend the soil with some organic matter prior to planting. Amending the soil will loosen it up and ensure that it drains well, both of which will help the roots adjust to their new home. Don't fertilize this late in the season. Wait until new growth begins in the spring and then feed lightly to encourage lots of new growth. Use an all=purpose garden fertilizer in amounts as suggested on the fertilizer label. Best wishes with your new plant!|
