It is August 25th and of course it is boiling hot down here in Florida. I moved into my house about 2 months ago and the lawn in filled with weeds and some grass. Can I grow grass during this weather and if so what steps do I need to take? If not, can I do any prep work so that I am ready to grow when it is the right season?

Adam,

This hot weather is fine for southern lawn grasses as long as you provide plenty of moisture in the soil. Water once or twice a week applying 1/2 to 1 inch of water. Use a rain gage or straight sided can to determine how long to water. Fertilize the lawn with a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio product. Divide the first number into 100 to get the number of pounds to apply per 1000 square feet of lawn area. Water the fertilizer in after applying it. Mow as often as you can to encourage good density in the turf.

By building the turf through proper mowing, watering and fertilizing your lawn will grow dense and choke out most of its weed problems over the course of the next year.
