I have a large pecan tree in my yard. My question is when should I prune and how much should be removed. It is a rather full tree and the limbs seem very burdened in the late summer.

Pruning is done in late winter. A large tree needs very little pruning. Just remove broken limbs or those that are too low basically. This year has brought a heavy nut crop to Texas pecans. Propping up limbs may help but there is little else you can do at this time.
