This season my superform maple and red maple trees didn't seem very 'full'. They didn't appear to have many leaves. I bought both of them as young trees and have had them for about 4 years. Is there anything I can do for them now to help them be in better shape next spring?

I suspect the past winter and spring seasons' oscillating temperatures and late freezes contributed to the sparseness. To give them a boost, you could top dress with good quality compost in mid fall and in early spring. If they are adjacent to a lawn that is being fertilized regularly then they would not need additional fertilizer beyond that. Good luck with your trees!
