| I am thinking of installing some raised gardening beds. My question is: How can I do that against a fence I share with two neighbors? Ie, won't the fence be buried, or potentially dirt fall through the fence into my neighbor's property? What do you suggest? thanks!! Linnaea |
| You're absolutely right to be concerned about the weight of the soil against the fences. It will eventually push its way through and your raised bed will end up in your neighbor's yard. You'll need to build a retaining wall out of concrete blocks or bricks on the fence sides of your raised beds to hold the soil in place. The least expensive avenue would be to stack concrete blocks several inches from both fences and drive stakes into the ground to hold them in place. You can make a free standing structure and fill it with topsoil, or you can simply place the blocks near the existing fences and leave the front of the bed open so it can slope down towards your yard. Either way, the neighbor's fences will not be compromised and you'll still have an elevated area in which to plant. |
