I have an established grapefruit tree that sustained severe bark damage from excessive pressure from a rope that was tied around it. The bark split in multiple places. What can I do to protect the exposed wood and repair the bark damage.

It's too bad your tree suffered damage from the rope, but it should be able to overcome the problem in time. The best thing to do is nothing at all; the bark will eventually grow to cover the exposed wood. There will be a scar, but aside from cosmetics, it should be okay. I know you are tempted to dress the wound, but anything you put there will hinder the natural callousing over of the wound so it's best to simply leave it alone.

Best wishes with your landscape!
