Tomatoes will sometimes develop concentric rings and cracks at the top if the soil is excessively wet due to severe overwatering or an extended period of heavy rains. It seems to happen when the fruit swells faster than the skin due to taking up the water so quickly. The extra water also dilutes the flavor. Some varieties of tomato are more crack resistant than others, and flavor will vary between varieties as well.
