|I have some boxwood hedges that have been at my Mother's house for 65+ years. They haven't been trimmed and look worn-out. Is it possible to trim them back and have them grow back or are they just too old? If I need to replace, I would like to replace them with an evergreen hedge that will grow no more than 4' tall, that is pest free, neat looking and hopefully doesn't take too long to grow-in. Any suggestions? Thank you.|
|Since the boxwoods are well rooted, I think I'd take a chance that they will grow back when you prune them back severely. I believe they will. If they don't, you'll need to dig them out and the root systems will be quite extensive. There's really nothing that grows as well as boxwoods in your area, and considering you'd have a real challenge getting the old plants out, let's hope they rebound after pruning and fill in within a few years.
Best wishes with your garden.
