How far back do I prune azaleas? Down to the ground?

Pruning all the way down to the ground could kill your plant! Usually azaleas are simply pruned back a few inches. If yours is overgrown, you can safely remove about one third of the growth without harming the plant. If you need to remove more than that, plan on pruning it back over a 2-3 year period, removing only one third of the growth each year.
