A 22-in pot is a little small for a shrub or tree. You will have the most success with something small, such as Nandina (heavenly bamboo), which looks like bamboo but does not have the extensive root system of a true bamboo. Plan to repot every 2-3 years, trimming the roots and adding fresh potting soil.
