|I am pretty new at gardening and I have a few questions. Should I start watering and fertilizing my grass now or should I wait longer? What month is a good month for Alb New Mexico? Also do I prune my trees and roses every year?
Thanks for your time,
|Welcome to gardening! Hybrid roses do need pruning every year to produce a good bloom period. Trees do not necessarily need pruning every year. It is okay to remove dead, diseased, broken, or crossing branches, but do not remove more than one-quarter to one-third of a tree in any year. Also, it is best to leave as many low branches as possible on a new transplant or young tree. Some people think they should prune up as soon as they transplant, but this is not good for the tree. It needs as much leaf material as possible to photosynthesize. These low branches also help the tree develop girth and strength. Pruning is best done during dormancy, starting in January-February for most trees. However, wait to prune spring-flowering trees and shrubs until after they bloom, or you will cut off the flowering buds. Start pruning roses in late March. Without knowing what type of grass you have, whether it's dormant or overseeded for the winter, it is hard to give a complete answer. Please send another email with the type of grass and whether it is overseeded. Thanks!|
