|I have three large bouganvillas planted around my house. Because we had freezing weather for three or four days in 2006 and cold weather (for us) this poast season, my shrubs lost most of their leafing. Two are now leafing out but one looks ill. Bare branches. Very few leafs on others. No blooms. What should I do?|
|The best thing you can do for your bougainvilleas is to prune out all of the damage from the past winter. Bougainvilleas produce flowers and leaves on new growth and pruning encourages new growth, so removing the damaged branches and stems will help renew your plants. I've cut mine down severely (to within a few feet of the ground) and had them come back without problem. Prune yours back and you'll be amazed at how quickly they produce new stems, leaves and flowers.
Best wishes with your bougainvilleas!
