We are new homeowners, and are having our small backyard landscaped soon. The front yard came landscaped with our newly built home. We have fescue grass in the front, and are planning on putting in the same in the back with mostly perennials, some fruit trees, and a small vegetable and herb garden. In general, what kind of care would our garden need, especially during the winter? If we were to have a gardener, what kinds of things would we need him to do during the winter? We are relatively new to gardening, and this is my first attempt at a vegetable and herb garden. Thank you!

Winter is generally a slow time in the garden. The grass may grow when the temperature is above 40F but most everything else will be resting so there's not much to do. If rainfall is sparse you'll want to water everything about every 7-10 days. If you hire a gardener, escort him around the property and ask him how he intends to take care of the plants. He should mention weeding, mowing, and pruning fruit trees. As a rule the gardener will know what to do and when. He/she should also recommend fertilizing both lawn and shrubs in March or April.

There are lots of books you can check out from the library so you can learn more about the specific plants you have in your yard.

Best wishes with your landscape!
