I have a couple of trees I think are hickory trees. One of them is losing its bark and appears to be dying. What can I do and how can I be sure they are hickjory trees?

Robert,
Hickories shed their bark in strips naturally. I suggest you take a photo of the plant and some samples of the bark and foliage and visit your County Extension Office. The should be able to look things over and make a decision as to whether or not your plant has a problem. I doubt that it does and in fact may just need a little fertilizing (one cup per inch or trunk diameter waist high).
