Annual pruning will help your ceanothus become bushier. This is because everywhere you make a pruning cut, the plant will develop two branches where one once was. If your ceanothus is very overgrown you'll want to prune carefully - take too much off and you'll end up with a bare and unattractive shrub. Start by pruning back only about one-third of the new growth this year. Next year, prune back another third. By the following year you will have reduced the size of your plant and forced new growth in the center. It should be thick and full by then.
