In the flooded delta, how do we make sure this new plant is a new and special addition to a shady yard?

Tell us how to take care of the plant other than just mulch?

Pieris is such a beautiful shrub and the springtime flowers are delightful. They are reasonably carefree shrubs; regular water and mulching over the soil surface should make them happy. You can prune your plant to encourage colorful new leaf growth. Wait until after the blossoms are spent and then prune the shrub back by a few inches. Every stem you prune will produce two new stems and lots of foliage. If you gently prune your Pieris every year it will develop into a compact, bushy shrub. If you neglect to prune your pieris, it will still be lovely, but the lower parts of the branches won't have as many leaves, which will give it a leggy look.

Enjoy your new Pieris!
