|I want to grow a climbing vine to grow up a lattice at the back of a bed which has shasta daisies, purple siberian iris and mixed herbs in the existing bed. The house is yellow now and may be a mocha color real soon. Any ideas on the best color choice/mix and/or type of climber?
|Think about Magnificent Trumpet Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens 'Magnifica'), which blooms from early summer right through to fall. The coral pink buds that explode into yellow trumpets that leave behind red berries in autumn. It's hardy to zone 4, grows an average of 25', and once established, is tolerant of marginal conditions. I think the color would pull together the others, and goes with either the yellow or mocha of your home. Consider, too, the vast selection of Clematis available. Make sure to choose one listed as hardy to zone 4. Check local nurseries first, sinc they'll likely have the hardiest, locally-grown plants. Roslyn Nursery (211 Burrs Lane, Dix Hills, NY 11746; ph# 516/643-9347) has the honeysuckle if you can't find it elsewhere. Enjoy!|
