I would like to dig up a small Japanese Maple and replant it. Is it recommended?

You can transplant a small Japanese maple without too much trouble. Winter is the best time when it is dormant, but early spring, before the weather gets too warm is also a good time. Be sure to plant your maple at the same soil level as it was growing in its original spot in the garden.
