|i have more than one type of grass in my yard and i would like to weed and feed
but im not sure what kind to use
is there one for all types of lawns
could i spread grass seed over the whole thing and try and make one kind of grass grow
I recommend not trying the combo product but rather to fertilize properly and then if weed control applications are needed to choose the best product for the weeds you have and the best timing too.
Healthy turf will choke out most of its weed problems. When the turf is thin and soil is exposed to the sunlight, weeds will sprout and you have a battle on your hands. So first concentrate building a thick, healthy lawn by proper mowing, watering and fertilizing, and you will be amazed at the results.
If efforts to improve your stand of turf fail to eliminate all the weeds, a herbicide application may be in order. Just keep in mind that the time to control various weeds and the time to fertilize rarely coincide. Therefore weed and feed combination products are not the best option.
In order to effectively control weeds with a herbicide application you should have the weeds identified so an appropriate product can be selected. Your County Extension Office can assist you with identifying the weeds and by recommending an appropriate herbicide.
Fertilize with no more than 1/2 to 1 pound of nitrogen in spring after you have mowed the grass twice, and again in fall (around late October). Apply a product with a 3-1-2 ratio of nutrients as this is roughly the ratio of nutrients grass takes in. So, for example, if you purchased a 15-5-10 fertilizer (15% nitrogen), you would apply about 7 pounds per 1000 square feet (1 pound / .15 = about 7). If you purchased a 21-7-14 fertilizer (21 % nitrogen), you would apply about 5 pounds per 1000 square feet (1 pound / .21 = about 5).
