The activity sounds more like a ground nesting bee to me. I think you moved things around the entrance hole to the nest. You'll need to just watch the area for bee activity - once you determine where the bee is entering and exiting you can take action. Ground nesting bees are very protective of their nests so once you have identified the entrance and exit hole, wait until after dark and then place a clear jar or glass bowl over the hole. The bees will try to emerge in the morning and won't be able to. Leave the jar or bowl over the hole for several days. When you see no more activity, you can safely remove it. Ground nesting bees use the same hole for entering and exiting their nest. By blocking the hole, you'll keep them in and they will starve.
