|I have a hosta that was practically dead last year. Now it has come back. I really need to move this plant. How deep should I dig to get the plant out and what's the best type of soil to use? We are in Lake Tahoe. What zone really are we in? Sincere thanks for any help you are able to give me.|
|The roots will probably be in a tight mass just below the main stems of the plant. Expect them to be 8-10" deep and as wide as the plant. Hostas will grow in average, well draining soils but really enjoy well-amended soils. Add some compost or aged-manure to the soil prior to planting and they will thrive.
You're in USDA zone 5.
Best wishes with your hostas!
