The least expensive way to a beautiful border is to purchase seeds and sow them in the prepared soil. Second least expensive is to purchase 6-paks of seedlings or flats of plants. Annuals are the least expensive; perennials the most expensive. If you choose large perennials, you'll spend the most.

First decide how much sunshine the area gets and choose plants which are either sun or shade loving. Then prepare the soil by digging in some organic matter (compost, etc.) After leveling the garden bed, sow your seeds or plant your plants. Keep everything well watered and your new plants should thrive.

When designing a garden bed or border, place the lowest growing plants in front and graduate to the tallest plants, which should be in the back of the bed (or in the center of an island bed). Choose your favorite colors and a mixture of leaf colors and textures and you'll have an outstanding garden.

Enjoy!
