I have bought Square Foot Garden by Mel Bartholomew. How do you feel about this type of gardening? It looks to me that not walking on the loam is a plus like you recommend, with your typical row type planting. Do you plan to ever address this technique?

Square foot gardening is just one of the many options available to the garden planner. You are right--if possible, it is helpful to create beds that you don't walk on. That way, the soil will require less and less tilling as you enrich the bed with organic matter. With square foot gardening, you'll get a maximum amount of produce in a minimum amount of space. If your garden space is limited, this might be a good choice. However, whenever you garden intensively like this, you need to make sure youput back into the soil all that you take out--that means enriching the beds with lots of organic matter, compost, aged manure, etc. And as with other styles of gardening, it is important to rotate crops each year.

Some people still like to till uptheir whole garden and start fresh each spring. It's really a matter of personal choice.
