Impatiens are great for shady gardens, but there are lots and lots of other choices. Try begonia, wishbone flower (Torenia fournieri), peace lily (Spathiphyllum), amethyst flower (Browallia), Lenten rose (Helleborus orientalis), periwinkle (Vinca minor), mazus (Mazus reptans), 'Big Blue' liriope (Liriope muscari), golden star (Chrysogonum virginianum), caladium, coleus, 'Mr. Goldstrike' Japanese aucuba (Aucuba japonica), Plum Passion nandina (Nandina domestica), variegated Japanese sedge (Carex hachijoensis 'Evergold'), camellia (Camellia japonica), winter daphne (Daphne odora), tea olive (Osmanthus fragrans), lobelia, hosta or hardy ferns. Hope these suggestions help you develop a colorful shade garden!
