| It's now May 23rd and since my lilacs appeared to have finished blooming, I went to prune them. What I found were blossoms that had not bloomed. They were not dried out but did seem a little limp. I don't think that they froze. They actually look like they are getting ready to bloom. I'm going to wait but is there something that could be causing this? |
| A cold snap, or a warm spell, or even water stress can retard the opening of the flowers so you're wise to hold off on pruning for a few more weeks. Lilacs become more reliable as they mature and seem to be able to tolerate all kinds of stresses (water, climate, etc.) and still bloom right on time. Best wishes with your garden. |
