Bald Cypress Tree with knees - Knowledgebase Question

I have a Bald Cypress Tree about 7 years old, when we purchased the tree, no one told us about the knees that come up out of the ground from all under the tree. We end up tripping over them when we find a new one. Is there anything we can do about this without cutting the tree down? We were given a suggestion of planting ground cover around the tree, but will it continue to have knees pop up in other places. We are open for suggestions. Azle, Texas Resident.

Judy,

I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you.

Old cypress trees will produce those knees wherever the soil is soggy wet or poorly aerated. Putting such areas and to a groundcover is a good way to avoid having to mow over the knees. It will also help to not overwater the soil were to take other steps that improve the drainage in that area.

Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon!
