Since you live in New Mexico, you probably have Bermuda grass and it is probably over-seeded with perennial ryegrass. Bermuda thrives during the hot summer weather but goes dormant in the fall when temperatures get cool. Perennial ryegrass is a cool season grass and just as the Bermuda is dying out, the ryegrass is just coming to life. Between the warm season and cool season grasses you should have a green lawn all season long. For a positive identification of your grass, dig out a 2" square of lawn, roots and all, and take it to your local nursery. They should be able to help you identify the grass.
