Re: Crepe Myrtles-Mid-South: Due to illness we have not cut back the shoots coming up from the bottom parts of the tree, which are profuse. Should we go ahead and trim all them off or let them go (they are larger than the top now). If they will bloom, I am tempted to let the lower ones go until next year. Do you think they will bloom too this year or should we cut off the bottom branches and hope the top takes off and really produces? |
Ann, I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you. Go ahead and come away and he shoots coming from the base of the plant now, making sure to cut us close to the trunk as you can so as not to leave a stub. This will not affect the plants blooming this year and it's better to go ahead and get rid of them now. Crape myrtles bloomed for about three months and then play out and ceased to bloom for the rest of the year in most cases. Thanks for the question. Best wishes for a wonderful gardening season. Please stop in again soon! |
