Macho fern (nephrolepis Biserrata - Knowledgebase Question

Question by reydora

I bought a Macho fern from Home Depot which I found out when I reached home to be a houseplant as the tag indicated. I have already bought 5 Kimberly Queen ferns which I am preparing to plant outdoors. What happens if I plant Macho fern outside in a shady, dark and moist area along with the other outdoor ferns?

Your macho fern is frost tender and will die down with the first frost. You didn't mention where you live so I don't know if you're gardening in a frost free area. If so, you can plant it outdoors; if your garden regularly gets frost, the plant will die, even in a protected area. It will grow in filtered sun but the leaves will burn if the temperatures get too hot, even if it is growing in the shade. Because it is so sensitive to heat and cold and dry air it is usually sold as a houseplant.
