|Can wieglia or burning bushes be kept trimmed and or shaped to prevent them from growing their full height? If not, what do you suggest for a low growing red shrub? I do not care for barberry.|
|Both weigela and burning bush can be pruned to keep them smaller than their normal height, but it will have to be done 2-3 times a year. An alternative is to purchase a dwarf variety; dwarf burning bush grows to an unpruned height of about 6'. That's not exactly low-growing, in my opinion. Or, you might consider growing Nandina 'Woods Dwarf'. It is a low maintenance shrub, requiring only one pruning each year to control plant size; it grows less than 2' tall. The foliage in the fall and winter months is red to maroon, but the leaves green up in spring and stay green during the summer months.
Best wishes with your landscape.
