Many fruit trees have a chilling requirement in order to set fruit. Apples and cherries need more winter cold than your area can provide, but you should be able to grow apricots, figs, plums, and persimmons in San Jose. If you have room for only one tree, choose a fig tree or a persimmon. They don't need cross pollination. If you have room for more than one tree choose either two different varieties of apricots or two different varieties of plums. Both apricots and plums are self-sterile and require a second variety for pollination and good fruit set.

Any of these trees will grow in clay soils.

Best wishes with your new fruit tree!
