| I want to plant a ground cover between large flagstones. The area is mostly Shade in pm; splattered sun in am Soil is dry and compacted. I am in Baltimore, Md. What can you suggest?? |
| There are several plants you might consider: Arenaria balearica "Corsican Sandwort" Low, dense mats of moss-like foliage make an excellent ground cover for shady, damp areas. Dainty white flowers completely cover in spring. Use between stepping stones or to cover bulb gardens. Creates unique green moguls when planted in tight quarters. Cymbalaria aequitrilobia "Mini Kenilworth Ivy" Tiny, green kidney shaped leaves creep and hold tight to any rock or crevice. Dwarf purple flowers bloom continuously throughout the summer. Great look for courtyards and pathways. Perfect in shady or semi-shady locations. Erinus alpinus "Balsam" Low growing carpet of olive green serrated tufts. Lovely spikes of violet flowers bloom in late spring and engulf entire plant. Excellent plant to use in rock gardens, dry creeks or around roses. Super tough plant; loves being neglected. Herniaria glabra "Green Carpet" Tiny tight green leaves on creeping stems form an extremely dense evergreen ground-cover. Foliage turns red during winter for great winter interest. Tiny white star flowers in summer. Perfect for walkways, rock garden paths or as a lawn substitute. Enjoy! |
