Peonies dislike being moved so the best time to do it is in the fall or in the very early spring. Wait until frost kills the tops of your peonies down then dig and transplant them, making sure to plant at the same soil level as they were growing before. If you plant too deeply they will fail to flower; too shallow and the roots will push the plant right out of the ground.

Moving astilbes and flowering shrubs can be done either in the spring or fall. You can cut off the spent flowers from your peonies but don't cut the foliage off until after it has been killed back by a hard freeze.

Best wishes with your garden!
