Squash, watermelons and tomatoes are mostly water so you'll need to water, especially during droughty summers. The best way to conserve water is to cover the soil around your plants with a thick mulch. Mulch will slow water evaporation, moderate soil temperatures and suppress weeds. Use straw, compost, etc. Deeply water your veggie garden once or twice a week to provide enough moisture to help the fruits grow. If you withhold water the plants will wilt and the fruits will not be as large as they could be with adequate water. They may even stop growing.

Best wishes with your garden!
