Your first step is to try to identify your chrysanthemum so you'll know whether or not it is one of the hardy mums. Florist's chrysanthemums are not as hardy as the garden variety mums so your plant may be only temporary unless you have a greenhouse. If you determine yours is a florist's mum, you can grow it indoors during the winter months and then take it outdoors during the spring and summer. If yours is a hardy mum, you can plant it outdoors and it should survive your Illinois winter weather. Wish I had more information to share with you.
