I recently received a clethra from Burpee. It has long roots. Do I bury them deeply or spread them out shallowly?

When you receive your Clethra bare root plant, soak the roots in warm water for a few hours, prepare the hole, amending the soil with compost only if the soil fertility is very poor. Dig a large size hole, at least 2 feet in diameter, but only as deep asthe length of the roots. Loosen the soil in the bottom of the hole and spread the roots evenly around the hole. Back full in soil keeping the roots in place. The crown of the plant should be at the soil line-- no deeper or shallower. By midsummer, you should be enjoying some flowers.
