I have some germaniums and impatiens growing in my cellar
under 40 watt fluorescent lights. I have to go away for
4 days and was wondering, if I turned off the lights for
4 days would this have any effects on my plants? I will be
watering them heavily before I leave. Do you have any

In four days without light, you plants may get a little leggy and pale. Is there any way you could rig up a timer, so that the lights are on for, say, 12 hours instead of 24? Or, you could keep the lights on, but move them up a bit from the tops of the plants, and place the well-watered (but not soaked) plants in large plastic bags. Close the bags loosely, so some air can get in, (or poke a few holes in them). Make sure the lights are high enough so they don't touch the bags. I think this might be a better solution than soaking the plants, then letting them sit in the dark--which could stress the plants and promote disease. Or do you have a neighbor who could come in and check on the plants (in return for a potted plant come spring?)

Hope thishelps.
