Can you tell me what types of evergreen trees and shrubs that I can plant around a blackwalnut tree in my zone 5 garden? I am interested in both tall and short varieties as I am trying to create a dense screen between mine and my neighbors yard. The area gets from 5-7 hours of full sun. Thank you in advance for your help! |
Planting near walnut trees can be a challenge because the trees exude an alleopathic chemical called juglone which can keep other plants from growing. Juglone is found in the roots, bark, leaves and nuts of walnut trees so simply keeping the leaves and fallen nuts off the ground won't eliminate the growth inhibiting juglone from affecting sensitive plants. Fortunately, there's a list of juglone tolerant plants so you can choose your favorite plants from this list: Celtis occidentalis, Common hackberry; Cercis canadensis, Eastern Redbud; Clematis terniflora, (syn. C. maximowicziana) Sweet autumn clematis; Clematis 'Red Cardinal'; Cornus florida, Flowering dogwood; Daphne mezereum; February daphne; Euonymus europaea, European spindletree; Euonymus hamiltoniana, Hamilton euonymus; Forsythia suspensa, Weeping Forsythia; Gleditsia triacanthos f. inermis, Thornless honey locust; Halesia carolina, Carolina silverbell; Hibiscus syriacus, Rose of Sharon; Ilex opaca, American holly; Juniperus chinensis 'Pfitzeriana', Pfitzer Chinese juniper; Kerria japonica, Kerria; Kerria japonica 'Pleniflora', Double-flower kerria; Lindera benzoin, spicebush; Lonicera maackia, Amur honeysuckle; Lonicera tatarica, Tatarian honeysuckle; Lonicera xylosteum, European fly honeysuckle; Parthenocissus quinquefolia,Virginia creeper; Philadelphus coronarius, Mock orange; Prunus cistena, Purple leaf sandcherry; Pyrus calleryana, Callery pear; Rosa multiflora, Multiflora rose; Syringa sp. (lilac); Viburnum lantana, Wayfaring-tree viburnum; Viburnum carlesii, Koreanspice viburnum. For screening, I'd recommend Euonymus, Kerria, or Viburnum. All have the potential to grow high and wide - perfect for screnning. Best wishes with your landscape! |
