i have bulbs inherited from an ex-neighbor. don't know type: leaves like huge blades of grass, produce

Actually, you'll be doing the plants a favor by dividing them. When roots/bulbs are overcrowded they don't grow very well and they won't bloom well because of the competition for moisture and nutrients. I would divide the clumps into smaller clumps by using a shovel and digging straight through the clump. As long as each division has some roots and some leaves, it should recover and grow into a healthy new plant.
