Hostas transplant best in late winter or early spring but you can plant them now and they should have time to establish before cold weather sets in. Expect the foliage to die down with the first frost. If you spread several inches of mulch, straw or pine needles over the soil after the leaves die down, it will help protect the roots from winter weather. Rake the mulch away in the spring and they should send up new sprouts early in the spring.
