I planted some Hostas around my Maple tree this spring and they aren't doing very well. I heard from someone that plants may have a hard time rooting when planted by a tree. Is this true? If not, what could my issue be with these Hostas? Some have not grown at all since they were planted.

What you have heard is true. The roots of large trees can compete for moisture and nutrients with the roots of smaller plants. The trees usually win. That may be what's going on with your hostas. You can either try keeping the soil more moist by watering more often, or you might consider moving your hostas to a space where they won't have to compete with the roots of your maple.
