I HAVE BEEN LOSING ALL OF THE LEAVES ON A JAPANESE MAPLE I BROUGHT THIS YEAR. THE BARK IS TURNING GRAY. WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT? THANKS, K NORRIS

Some Japanese maples grow best with morning sun and filtered afternoon shade. If yours is the laceleaf or tender type, you may want to replant it in a more protected area. Aside from that, maples need a deep soaking once each week (twice if the weather is really hot). Without adequate water, the tree can die. Be sure you're watering deeply but allowing the top of the soil to dry out before watering again.
