| If the iris bed is overcrowded, the plants will fail to bloom. We recommend digging and replanting irises every 3-4 years. Start by cutting the foliage down to 5-6" (I clip mine in a fan shaped because that's how they normally grow. Then carefully dig each plant up. A garden fork works great! After you've removed them all, break off the old ends and replant the centers of the rhizomes. Set them just barely below the soil surface (too deep and they may fail to bloom). Give each replanted rhizome at least 6" of space on all sides. Water them in well and then spread an organic mulch over the soil surface. When winter kills the tops down, pull them off and your irises will be ready to grow and bloom next summer. Enjoy! |
