DAMAGED PHILODENDREN - Knowledgebase Question

Tropical Storm Fay blew my beautiful Philodendren's large trunk totally horizontal! It had such big, beautiful leaves and they are on the ground crushed. I've tried to lift them up but they are heavy. The trunk seems to be solid and I am not able to pull it up. Some of the leaves are growing upright but I'm afraid I should cut off the ones on the bottom before they rot being wet and getting no air. I don't want to lose this beautiful plant. Please advise what to do.

You can cut those leaves off of the plant and it will be fine. If the trunk can be lifted slowly into position and stake it there. If not leave it laying horizontal and then new growth extensions of the trunk will turn up and grow upright. This type of thing happens in nature and the philodendron can take it. In fact it may send out some roots from the trunk where it lays on the ground.
