|I planted a red wegelia about 5 yrs. ago. It bloomed the first year but has not bloomed since. It is situated south side of the house on a terrace built with railroad ties. Also, it competes with lantana for moisture and sun. The lantana bloom great and grows to 5 ft. high. The wegelia puts out canes and foliage, but won't bloom. What am I doing wrong?
|Weigela needs at least 8 hours of direct sunshine in order to bloom well. I'd take the opportunity this fall or winter to move the shrub to a sunnier site where it won't have to compete for moisture and nutrients. In the early spring, prune it back to encourage healthy new growth. That new growth should flower for you. Enjoy!|
